Position Description

 

Position Title:         Special Education Teacher Assistant 

 

Reports To:                 School Administrator       

 

NATURE OF WORK 

 
  • The Teacher Assistant assists the teacher in implementing each child’s Individual Education Program goals and objectives. Assist in planning and preparing the learning environment, setting up centers, conduct learning exercises with small groups of students, and preparing needed materials and supplies. Assist students, as assigned by Principal, with personal care needs and medical procedures for which trained. Supports may also include, but not limited to, face to face instruction, walks in designed school areas, talks in helping to verbally deescalate and working with Special Education Teacher in the implementation of social skills lessons.

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

 
  •  Minimal high school diploma.

  • Applicants should have previous experiences in working with children, preferably with students with disabilities related to mental health and behavioral disorders

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 
  1. Assist the teacher in implementing each child’s Individual Education Program goals and objectives as well as Common Core and/or Extensions of Common Core Standards.

 
  1. Assist in planning and preparing the learning environment, setting up centers, and preparing needed materials and supplies. Follow classroom and individual schedules as directed by teacher.

 
  1. Assist students, as assigned by teacher and/or Principal, with personal care needs (feeding, toileting, etc.) and medical procedures for which trained.

 
  1. Conduct learning exercises with small groups of students.

 
  1. Guide students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.

 
  1. Assist with the supervision of students to ensure safety at all times.

 
  1. Alert the teacher to special needs of individual students.

 
  1. Collect and display suitable material for educational displays.

 
  1. Develop materials and group lessons to meet instructional objectives determined by the teacher.

 
  1. Correct students’ work under the teacher’s supervision.

 
  1. Participate in discipline procedures and prescribe consequences for student 

behavior under teacher supervision (follow teacher behavior plan and/or Behavior Intervention Plan). 

 
  1. Assist  the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing behavior or        

academic skills.

 
  1. Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher 

assigned in the absence of the teacher.

 
  1. Help with general housekeeping tasks and to maintain a neat and organized 

classroom.

 
  1. Follow appropriate communication lines to discuss concerns- i.e.- teacher, principal, EC Program Staff.

 
  1. Adhere to all policies of school and district (see code of conduct). 

 
  1. Maintain the confidentiality of personally identifying information and all student records.

 
  1. Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or the Building 

Principal.

 
  1. Complete other duties as assigned by the Exceptional Children’s Program Director.

 
  1. Adhere to Para-manual guidelines.
